Holi Celebration at Bellmont Caves
Holi (Festival of Colors/Festival of Love) is one of the most popular festivals in India and around the world. It’s a celebration of colors, food and the connection of people of all age groups and creeds.
The festival is also the eve of winter in India and the birth of spring. It is celebrated for two days (Late February or early March — Holi is celebrated on the full-moon day).
On Holika Dahan (Chhoti Holi), the first day, bonfire is lit. The bonfire is built with heirlooms that are already at home – cracked prices of furniture, brooms, broken pieces of cloth. They are also symbols of good overcoming evil, the arrival of spring and a bumper crop of spring.
The second day Rangwali Holi or Dhulandi is spent with colours, water guns and water balloons.
History of Holi
Holi itself comes from Hindu religious texts. Holi itself comes from Holika in Sanskrit, who is the wicked sister of the demon king Hiranyakashipu in Hindu mythology. Holika’s death is relayed on the day before Holi as a ceremony known as Holika Dahan where bonfires are lit to commemorate the triumph of good over evil. People shower colored powder and water at each other, dance and feast on Holi the following day. The festival marks the victory of the good over the evil, spring, winter.
Holi too is said to have begun with the love affair of Lord Krishna with his mistress Radha. The myth goes that Lord Krishna was a dark man and envy Radha’s fair skin. He applied colours to Radha’s face so she would resemble him, his mother Yashoda said. The silliness of coloring each other’s faces was soon the norm and became the Holi festival.
